African Leadership University

FR : Concours pour la construction d’un centre universitaire à Kigali. Notre proposition part d’une volonté de créer un bâtiment mettant en avant la richesse culturelle locale avec une architecture ambitieuse et originale.

Le projet s’organise autour de volumes indépendants correspondants aux différents éléments du programme. Cette organisation permet de cadrer des vues sur le contexte et de créer un parcours extérieur riche qui progresse d’une strate de programme à l’autre pour finir sur le volume central du Volcan dans lequel peuvent se rassembler les étudiants.

Pour limiter l’énergie utilisée par les bâtiments et intégrer le projet dans une démarche responsable, nous avons choisi de travailler avec des briques produites localement et qui apportent une grande inertie au projet. A cela se rajoute un système de toiture qui permet de mettre en place une ventilation naturelle pour un confort thermique optimal.

En plus du matériau brique, le projet est marqué par des touches de couleurs vives qui accompagnent le parcours et donnent à lire les différents bâtiments. Le Volcan est quant à lui couvert d’un matériau volcanique de couleur rouge, ce qui le met encore plus en valeur.

Architectural design competition for the new African Leadership University in Kigali. The starting point of our proposal was to highlight the rich local culture with an ambitious and original architectural design.

The project is organized around independent volumes in which are found the different parts of the program. This volumetric composition allows us to create striking views on the environment, as well as rich exterior paths meandering through the project and ending by the Volcano where the students can gather.

To limit the energy consumption and follow a sustainable design approach, we chose to work with locally made bricks bringing high thermic inertia to the buildings. Moreover, the roofing system designed for the project allows us to have natural ventilation for an optimal thermic comfort.

In addition to the brick material, touches of bright color are placed along the paths while giving a unique and strong lecture to the buildings. The Volcano is treated with a red natural volcanic rock setting it apart from the rest of the buildings and thus highlighting the importance of that gathering space.
