FR : La bibliothèque du quartier de Gosan à Daegu en Corée du Sud a été conçue comme une forme sculpturale dans le paysage. Entouré d’immeubles d’habitation de taille moyenne le bâtiment se fond dans son environnement en adoptant une échelle similaire. Sa singularité s’exprime par sa volumétrie monolithique aux angles vifs. La façade est composée d’une multitude de triangles en verre ou en métal plein ou perforé qui réfléchissent l’environnement subtilement.

La façade nord s’incline vers le parc et le réfléchit. Une rampe vient le prolonger pour créer un espace public qui s’enroule autour du bâtiment. Cet espace sert de doux écrin végétal au volume angulaire.

Le hall est conçu comme un espace d’intimité. Bas de plafond, c’est un espace qui rassemble les bornes de recherche, le bureau d’accueil, un espace de périodiques, organisés autour d’un escalier monumental qui mène aux espaces de lecture. L’espace de conférence complètement vitré dans le prolongement du hall peut être transformé en espace d’exposition flexible.

Avant d’accéder aux espaces de lecture en open space le visiteur traverse un étage opaque, celui des réserves. Cet étage à proximité des collections sert de transition entre l’espace d’entrée horizontal bas de plafond, à l’ambiance feutrée, et les espaces de lecture verticaux, aériens, transparents, baignés de lumière.

Le système de façade se retourne en toiture, il filtre le soleil, créant des jeux d’ombre dans les espaces de lecture, la lumière omni directionnelle participe à l’architecture et invite à l’inspiration.

UK : The Gosan quarter library in Daegu, South Korea, was designed as a sculptural element in the landscape. Surrounded by medium sized apartment buildings the project blends in with its context by respecting the neighborhood’s scale. Its singularity comes form its monolithic volumetry with sharp angles. Multiple glass and metal panels compose the façade allowing to have a subtle reflection of the surroundings on the building.

The North face of the project is tilted toward the park and reflects it. A ramp extends the park towards the library creating a public space that wraps around it. This outdoor green space brings an interesting contrast the angular volumetry of the project.

The hall was designed as an intimate space. Under its low ceiling are gathered the information booths, the reception desk and the periodical area, all organized around a monumental staircase leading to the reading spaces. The conference space which is completely glazed in the continuity of the hall can also be transformed as a flexible exposition space.

Before getting to the reading area which is organized as an open-space the visitor crosses the opaque storage level. Close to the collections this story serves as a transition between the low-ceilinged entry hall with its muffled atmosphere and the transparent, sun bathed, vertical reading spaces.

The façade system continues on the roof, filtering the sunlight and casting shadow patterns on the reading spaces. Light and shadow take part in the definition of the library’s architecture and aim to inspire the visitor.
